A 12-pound hawksbill turtle crawled up to die on a North Carolina beach. An autopsy showed that half of its weight was plastic. Its stomach and intestines contained multi-colored beads, part of a comb, two golf tees, a toy wheel, rope, balloon, part of a plastic bottle, a plastic toothpaste cap, the top of a plastic medical syringe, baggies, and a plastic flower.* Its contents were carb-free, but had no nutritional value. (As referenced by Paul Varo Martinson in World Religions: The Problem of Imaging Christ, Imaging Christ: Politics, Art, Spirituality, ed. Francis A. Eigo, Villanova, PA: Villanova University Press, 1991, 111).

Apart from the environmental and ecological travesties associated with the turtle’s poor food choices, this unfortunate incident speaks to the message of this post: Unless we are open to personal and spiritual transformation and to the transformational languaging which goes along with it, we risk having our spirit choked and clogged with the plastic half-truths of conventional thinking and embedded theology which can clutter half, or all, of our thinking.

We encourage you to ‘get over’ carrying around plastic thoughts and attitudes like the plastic trash in the turtle’s stomach before they send you crawling up on beaches of convention instead of soaring up mountains toward enlightenment.

This blogcast is based on a chapter from a really neat book entitled ‘Get Over It’ (It’s our book so we’re naturally high on it!). This article is designed to help you move from plastic to platinum in your thinking — from blind acceptance of conventional thinking to the unlimited openness and joy of transformational thinking.

The phrases we’re inviting you to ‘get over’ in this blogcast usually come as a pair. They are: “Birds of a feather stick together” and “opposites attract.”

We’re going to give you a bird’s eye view of these assumptions which we believe are flying out of formation. These two phrases, we think you’ll agree, have been winging it for some time. (Forgive us … we couldn’t resist the puns! But there is a serious message nesting here.)

The “birds of a feather stick together” proverb has been around a long time … since at least the mid 16th century. It first appeared in 1545 in William Turner’s version of his papist satire The Rescuing of Romish Fox:

Byrdes of one kynde and color flok and flye allwayes together.

No such origin can be found for “opposites attract,” although its origin may be closer than we think. It is actually a social psychology concept called “common belief factor.” It springs from the word “heterocentrism.”  “Hetero” is the Greek word for “different. “Centre” is Greek for “centered on” or “drawn toward.”  To use a similar analogy, a “heliocentric” plant, like a sunflower, is one that grows toward or is drawn to the sun. So, something which is “heterocentric” involves two or more UNLIKE things that are drawn towards each other.

Do opposites attract? Or do birds of a feather flock together? What does the latest research literature have to say about that? In one of the most comprehensive studies ever undertaken on these questions, researchers at the University of Iowa found [those of you who are looking for the perfect soulmate or business partner may want to listen carefully]:

  • that people tend to hang around people who are similar in attitudes, interests, philosophy, religion, and values.
  • However, it is the complementary nature of our personalities that appears to be more important in maintaining enduring and happy relationships. Those similarities include character traits like: assertiveness, introversion and extroversion, compassion, even-temperedness, sense of humor, and so on. (The findings appear in the February issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Vol. 88, No., 2, published by the American Psychological Association (APA).

Other than that, nothing is definitive. The concepts of ‘birds of a feather flocking together’ or ‘opposites attracting’ seem to boil down to one thing: the power of choice.

There is no automatic, incontrovertible, mindless magnetism that pulls people together. If that sounds like fowl language, we invite you to consider the fact that in order for these two sayings to be absolute sayings they would have to be true in all circumstances.

People who are the same don’t always hang out with each other. Opposites aren’t always attracted to each other. We choose with whom we flock, herd, swim, swarm, or hibernate.

We (the authors f this blog) like to hang around with open-minded people and other truth seekers. We also like to flock with dancers, people who love the performing arts, open-minded people, high energy people, bloggers, philosophers and metaphysicians, possibility-thinkers, healers, and frozen custard lovers, good conversationalists, movie goers, people who love to travel, people who have a good sense of humor, and banana pudding lovers, to name a few!

So who do you prefer to flock with — and what impact do they have on your life? Choose wisely, because the right people will help you walk the spiritual path on practical feet!

Ground Under Repair

Road Work AheadNo matter where you travel, it seems there is road work going on. The “ground” is always under repair! This is a great metaphor for our spiritual growth, especially when  it comes to our prosperity consciousness. There are always areas we can work on to strengthen and grow, and from a spiritual standpoint, we always have “ground under repair!” Learn how to stand on the solid ground of Truth, and make the improvements that will guarantee a life more centered, more peaceful, and more prosperous!

Beat the Heat!

Beat the HeatWe are experiencing record-breaking heat this summer, and people have become very creative in ways to “beat the heat!” This Sunday, Revs. Bil & Cher will be looking at a different kind of heat — the heat of dealing with those difficult people in your lives … the heat of emotional situations … the heat of unmanifested expectations. How can we use our Spiritual Truths to deal with this situations in a way that keeps us cool, calm, and Divinely centered?

We have had the delightful privilege of officiating at several beautiful weddings this summer, and each one is unique and special. One of the biggest issues the couple deals with in the wedding planning seems to have nothing to do with the ceremony. It involves who to invite! Have you ever turned down an invitation to attend someone’s wedding? It seems like a simple decision … but it can have an incredible spiritual impact!

In Matthew 22:2-14, that’s exactly what happened.  First, let us share an “updated” version! It all begins begins with, “The kingdom of heaven is like …:

A CEO Facebooked, Tweeted, and e-mailed wedding invitations for his son, then sent his staff to re-invite those he had already contacted online. That seems a little redundant, but that’s what he did. Despite the personally delivered second invitation, the guests refused to come.

So the CEO invited the guests a third time. He instructed the staff to tell the prospective guests that Emeril Agassi was preparing the meal and that it would be wonderful.

He reminded the guests that he had two big screen TVs, Wii games they could play, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, three saunas, four hot tubs, plenty of hor d overs, and enough drinks for everyone.

But the prospective guests still ignored the invitation.

Some of the guests said they were too busy. They had other things to do. Others were so irritated at the invitation that they went postal and killed the CEO’s staff. So the CEO hired the Russian mafia and had all of the guests assassinated who were responsible for killing his staff.

The CEO told his remaining staff to e-mail, Tweet, Skype, and Facebook as many people as they could and invite them to his son’s wedding. It didn’t matter who the people were. He just wanted people in seats at the wedding.

But when the CEO came in to see the guests, he noticed one of the guests was not wearing the proper black tie attire. So he approached the man and asked why he wasn’t properly dressed. The man was both surprised and speechless. Without further ado the CEO had the man handcuffed and thrown out of the banquet hall.

For many are invited, but few are chosen.

Wow! That would be a wedding to remember! The thing is, this story, like many Bible stories, is not meant to be taken literally. Whenever a Biblical account seems bizarre or convoluted, you can bet your lottery ticket it is a signal to look for its deeper spiritual truth.

Look at how this story begins: “The kingdom of heaven is like…” and then the next 13 verses are filled with rudeness, violence, and murder. That’s not the kind of heaven we envision. How ‘bout you? Look, we’ve all been brought up in conventional religious traditions. We are all refugees from embedded theology. That’s why we’re drawn to this search for deeper Truth. We know there’s more to the Bible than the Bible we grew up with.

Killing your guests because they refused to come to your wedding. Please! And that’s what the kingdom of heaven is like? We don’t think so! In its literal version, this story is selling fear, self-righteous murder, and violence. In its literal version it reads like a breaking news segment on CNN.

Here’s another, more sane view, from a Spiritual perspective. This metaphysical snapshot should clear this story up very nicely :

  • The kingdom of heaven represents the process of becoming one with the Christ Presence within us.
  • The CEO or king, as the scripture reads, is God, the Eternal One, Divine Mind, the First Cause, or whatever name you use to describe the One Reality that is All That Is.
  • The wedding invitation is the call to marry our human self with our Christ Self (the two shall be one – human self and divine self).
  • The wedding banquet is the Unlimited, Omnipresent Substance which is readily available to us each-consecutive-moment-of-now.
  • The servants(staff) are spiritual thoughts, ideas, and divine inclinations.
  • The killing and murder represent our neglect, refusal, disinterest in, and failure to apply truth principles.
  • Inviting anyone and everyone symbolizes our willingness and openness to change old habits and belief systems.
  • The man improperly dressed represents our attempt to understand spiritual truths with a material consciousness.
  • Binding the man’s hands and feet and tossing him into the darkness means that we are unable to do the work we have come here to do as long as we remain in the dark about our true nature.

In a nutshell, this story has this to say to us:

Becoming aware of our innate divinity is like this: The first thing we’ve got to understand is that the allness of God is in the eachness of us. We must realize that we have total and complete access to incredible abundance, unless we choose to deny our innate divinity and neglect to apply truth principles.

When we fail to apply Truth principles, we handcuff our spiritual growth and remain unaware of our incredible Christ potential. We remain in the dark.

But if we accept the divine invitation to be the best Christ we can be, we will be able to have anything we want on the banquet table — things like health, inner strength,        happiness, compassion,  inner peace, unconditional love,  self-confidence,  wisdom, joy, unlimited prosperity.

Every one of these “delicious dishes” can be yours. But you’ve got to show up at the wedding. You’ve got to accept the divine  invitation. You’ve got to enter the banquet hall prepared to accept your good.

In her book Dare to Believe, May Rowland, Director of Silent Unity for over 55 years said: “I remembered from the teachings of Charles Fillmore that Jesus Christ made a rent in the materialistic consciousness and showed us the way back to God, thus shortening the evolutionary period of our spiritual development by millions of years.”

You, too, can rent the veil of materialism and take your place at the banquet table of peace, abundance, and prosperity.

Imagine what a world we could create, imagine what your life could be, if each of us married our human self with our Christ Self, our True Self!

We could live happily ever after. Why not start right now ?

Cross My Heart and Hope To … – Part Three

Part Three (of 3)

These past two weeks, we have explored some dramatic ways to change the way you could complete the phrase, “Cross my heart, and hope to …” We’ve talked about Cross my heart and hope to SEE Truth; and Cross my heart and hope to SPEAK Truth.

This week is our final recommendation … and perhaps the most important of all for our spiritual growth.

Cross my heart and hope to BE Truth:

This means we become one with the Truth of who we are and let our light shine! In other words, we get out of our own way! At a recent Meditation Class we facilitated, we practiced an Art Meditation. The activity asked people to think of an issue they are dealing with in their lives that they’d like Spiritual insight on. Then we go into a meditation, and when they are ready, people get up and select paper and art supplies, then just draw, without really having a plan of what to expect or what it will look like. Following the meditation, people are invited to share their experience if they’d like, as well as describe what showed up on their paper.

What was so neat about what one person in the class shared was that she did not expect this to be a meaningful experience. She was really skeptical. However, to her credit, she decided to go ahead and do it with an open mind and see what happened. As she began, she came up with a drawing, but it didn’t feel right, so she grabbed another piece of paper and started again — and more ideas and thoughts flowed to her, and she did a third drawing which really spoke to her, and brought some amazing insights.

What a perfect example of allowing yourself to BE Truth, whether you actually think it will be helpful or not; regardless of what the world of appearance is saying; regardless of what you feel about it; in spite of what you are hearing from your internal Cynic… just BE Truth, and allow the Christ of you to speak and guide you.

As we learn to “Cross our heart and BE Truth” we cross out error and move one step closer to Enlightenment.

This week, you have incredible adventures just waiting to happen for you … opportunities to grow more into your Christhood … opportunities to move further along on that incredible journey of your own spiritual growth and development.  So we encourage you to Cross Your Heart and Hope to — no, we want you to KNOW that you will —

  • See Truth,
  • Speak Truth, and
  • Be Truth. .. and let your light shine —

So you can experience the joy of enlightenment as you walk the spiritual path on practical feet.
